A Note About Panic Buttons
There has been a lot of recent press about the use of panic buttons in school shootings. This is a note from LifeSpot's founder, Brett Titus, about the use of panic buttons:
"I'd like to share some thoughts based on my experience as a cop for over 30 years and most of it in Special Ops. First, language matters. Using the word "panic" in any system can have an unintended psychological impact. We train people not to panic, so they shouldn't even see that word during a crisis.
Secondly,I've seen firsthand the challenges with many so-called "panic" buttons. A panic button built into a badge that needs to be worn each day can easily be forgotten and left at home. In addition, they often add unnecessary complexity, involving too many steps and doesn't reach all the right people, which ultimately delays response times. In my view, notifications need to be instant and notify five key groups quickly: 911, the officer on the street, their command staff, EMS, and all staff at that location. Approximate threat location is extremely important as well.
Finally, after the alert, there needs to be immediate two-way communication with law enforcement, and the system should allow for quick updates on injuries or critical developments. It's heartbreaking that this is the reality we face, but we can and must do better in responding to these tragic situations."
